Art students from all over HISD are participating in the 34th Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner by creating original Thanksgiving themed art work to be used as placemats! Shulze Elementary Art teacher Jeanne Dezaro coordinated with all of the art teachers districtwide to allow our students an opportunity to participate in this wonderful community service project. Pictured are kindergarten students from Columbia Heights Elementary working on their placemats.
The Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner continues to provide senior citizens and less fortunate a place to enjoy a hot and nutritious turkey dinner with all the trimmings on Thanksgiving Day. Held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in downtown San Antonio, the event invites seniors to dine at a “community dinner table”, celebrate the holiday with their peers, and enjoy live music and entertainment. The week of November 11 - November 15, 2013, Students at Columbia Heights ES saw the fruits of their creativity and hands on labor resulting in a variety of whimsical and colorful ceramic pieces. Coil and pinch pots were introduced but students were also allowed to create their 3-dimensional free form works of art using low fire clay with low fire glazes. We discussed the history of pottery such as Egyptian and Greek pieces. In addition, we talked about Maria Martinez, world renown ceramic artiist from the Southwest United States, and her works. The Red Dragon was created by 5th Grader Josiah Granado, who has a storied history of winning numerous art awards in various contests since he was in Pre-Kinder here at Columbia Heights! We will be submitting his Red Dragon ceramic piece to Sax Arts for possible publication in the Sax Arts 2014 Elementary Art Supply Catalog. We wish him the best of luck.
We are closing out the Fall Semester by creating ceramic Christmas ornaments using a variety of tools. Every student at CHES will have the opportunity to create a personal piece to take home.

COLUMBIA HEIGHTS ART EXHIBITED AT PALO ALTO COLLEGE
Mrs. Jennifer Mejia, facilities events coordinator at Palo Alto College, helped Columbia Heights art teacher Noe Garza organize an art exhibit featuring metal foil art of colorful Calaveras. Eighteen panel boards with nine Calaveras each graced the walls of the Palomino Building which houses administrative offices. One of the Vice-presidents of the college viewed the art and was amazed that it was created by elementary students. The show will be up till the end of January. We want to thank Mrs. Jennifer Mejia and the staff at PAC and CHES principal Mrs. Lighthall for their support of our student art. Pictured is CHES art teacher, Noe Garza.

During the month of February, HISD will be exhibiting art at the Region 20 ESC Maples Conference Center. The following art was selected to represent our district.
